This site keeps as little as it can.

• When you buy: Stripe handles your payment. We receive your email address, the amount and the date, which is how we know the book is yours. We never see your card details.
• When you sign in: we email you a one-time code and store only a scrambled copy of it for ten minutes. A cookie keeps you signed in for up to 60 days.
• If you ask for the free sample: we keep your email address, the first name if you give one, and the date. We use them to send you the sample link and, only if you tick the box for it, an email when there is a new essay or episode on this site. Nothing else. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and the page records only a scrambled form of your network address, for a day, to stop abuse.
• When you read: we don't track what you read or how far you get.
• If you're an invited reviewer: we record which chapters you open and reach the end of, and keep the notes and back-cover line you send, so the author can see them. Your name and email are kept with them. Nobody else sees any of it, and your line is printed only if you agree.

Email is sent through Resend; the site and its database are hosted by Vercel and Neon in the United States. We don't sell or share your information. To have your purchase record deleted, reply to your receipt.
